Coverage in Ontario*

The Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program provides public reimbursement for the FreeStyle Libre system for Ontario residents who manage diabetes with insulin.

Coverage in Quebec

Quebec provides public reimbursement for the FreeStyle Libre sensors, covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), for Quebec residents 18 years or older with experience in diabetes self-management and managing diabetes with insulin.

If you are a resident of Quebec and meet the requirements above, here are the 5 simple steps to get reimbursed by RAMQ:

  1. Speak with your prescribing physician to confirm your eligibility for coverage by RAMQ.
  2. Your prescribing physician will fill out and submit an authorization request to RAMQ, which can take up to 25 business days to process.
  3. Take your prescription to your local pharmacy and ask your pharmacy team to check the status of your application online. Your approval will also be sent to you by mail.
  4. Once your request is approved by RAMQ, you can fill your prescription in a pharmacy. If you qualify for coverage, you will receive reimbursement for a 3-month period to determine if the FreeStyle Libre system is right for you. 
  5. To ensure uninterrupted coverage, be sure to follow up with your prescribing physician before your first 3 months of coverage ends. Reapplication requests require up to 25 business days to process. You may be eligible for additional coverage of up to 12 months.

Coverage in the Yukon§

Yukoners over 18 years of age with type 1 diabetes.

Coverage in PEI

Effective June 1, 2022, the FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system is reimbursed under the Prince Edward Island Pharmacare under their provincial Diabetes Glucose Sensor Program. Those eligible must be 18 years of age or older, on multiple daily injections of insulin (three or more) or using an insulin pump, and must be enrolled in the Diabetes Glucose Sensor Program.

Coverage in Manitoba**

As of March 14, 2023, Manitoba Health has expanded coverage of the FreeStyle Libre system to eligible Manitobans who meet specific criteria.**

Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB)††

Effective April 25, 2023, the Non-Insured Health Benefits program, managed by Indigenous Services Canada, provides FreeStyle Libre coverage to eligible First Nations and Inuit clients who meet specific criteria.††

Most private insurance providers also cover the FreeStyle Libre 2 system. Talk to your insurance provider or your plan administrator to find out if you're covered.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system is publicly covered by several provinces in Canada and by most private health insurance plans.

* For people managing diabetes with insulin.

† For residents of Quebec, the following two criteria must be met: intensive insulin therapy (insulin pump treatment or ≥3 insulin injections per day), and frequent hypoglycemic events during the last year. 

‡ Official Mark of the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec.

§ For people over 18 years of age with type 1 diabetes.

¶ Those eligible for reimbursement in Prince Edward Island must be 18 years of age or older, be taking three or more daily injections of insulin or using an insulin pump, and must be enrolled in the Diabetes Glucose Sensor Program.

** For patients living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, who are currently on both basal and bolus insulin or using an insulin pump.

†† FreeStyle Libre system (reader and sensors) is a limited use benefit for individuals who are currently managing their diabetes with insulin.
