Important Information: If you start your FreeStyle Libre 2 or FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor with your FreeStyle Libre 2 reader you will not receive real-time glucose readings, even if you use the updated FreeStyle LibreLink app as your second device. You will need to scan to get your glucose reading on both devices. Glucose alarms are only received on the device used to start the sensor.

Availability on prescription

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is approved to be prescribed from the 1st April 2024 in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Wide availability of the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is not expected until June 2024 once GP systems have been updated.

From June 2024 onwards, speak to your healthcare team during your routine appointment to discuss transitioning to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.

What’s new/different compared to the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor?

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor can be worn up to 15 days and is indicated for children 2 years and older, whereas the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor can be worn for up to 14 days and is indicated for children 4 years and older. The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor also demonstrates outstanding 15-day accuracy.1

Will I need a new reader? / Do I need to upgrade my FreeStyle Libre 2 reader so it’s compatible with the new sensor?

If you are a current user of the FreeStyle Libre 2 system, please speak to your healthcare team about the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor from June 2024, at your next routine appointment, to discuss voluntary replacement. Not all GP systems will be updated before then.

How do I get my prescription changed so I can get the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor?

If you currently use the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor on the health service, you can transition to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor. We recommend you speak to your healthcare team about it so they can update your prescription to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.

Will I automatically be transferred over to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor or do I have to request it from my doctor?

If you currently use the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor, you can transition to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor. Please speak to your healthcare team so they can update your prescription to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.

Are you discontinuing the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor?

We continue to develop our FreeStyle Libre product portfolio as technology evolves to bring the latest innovation to people living with diabetes. Which is why we have taken the decision to discontinue Abbott‘s FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors in UK at the end of August 2025 once people with diabetes have transitioned to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor sends real-time glucose readings straight to compatible smartphones,1,2 additionally it has a 15-day wear time and is suitable for children from the age of two years and above and adults living with diabetes,3 including pregnant women. And it conveniently works with the current FreeStyle Libre 2 reader and FreeStyle LibreLink app,2 so it’s a smooth transition.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is authorised to work with Insulet’s Omnipod® 5 AID system4 if you live with Type 1 diabetes and you are eligible for a hybrid closed loop system.

1. Glucose readings are automatically displayed in the FreeStyle LibreLink app only when the smartphone and the FreeStyle Libre 2/2 Plus sensors are connected and in range.

2. The FreeStyle LibreLink app is only compatible with certain mobile devices and operating systems. Please check the website for more information about device compatibility before using the app. Sharing of glucose data requires registration with LibreView.

3. For children aged 2-12, a caregiver at least 18 years old is responsible for supervising, managing, and assisting them in using the FreeStyle Libre 2 system and interpreting its readings.

4. Users need to start their FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor with Omipod® 5 app. Omnipod is a registered trademark of Insulet corporation and is used with permission.
