Having had the FreeStyle Libre 2 system from the very beginning of my diabetes journey, the news that it would soon support real-time glucose readingsi left me and my family members, who all have the readings and optional glucose alerts shared with themii, eagerly waiting for the update button to pop up on our phones.

For me personally, the update came at a time where I had become lazy with my management; life changes such as the end of my college experience and the changeover to university life also compounded this lack of effort on my part and I knew that the update was probably going to be a positive one to put me back on track. Spoiler- it did!

More engaged with my management

As soon as the FreeStyle LibreLink appi update dropped, all our phones were updated accordingly, and my family were all set up so that they could also receive the minute-by-minute readings. The family members that didn’t value their sleep also opted to have their low alarms turned on, sorry mum!iv

However, not limited to its functionality, the updated app enabled me to see real-time glucose readings on my smartphone without the need to scani, iii, something that eases the process of glucose monitoring, and this instantly altered my management. I became very diligent again with my monitoring, I was able to see whether I was going low in the night and adjusted management accordingly, after sharing my data with my diabetes nursev. The ability to see my sugars by simply opening my app, has proven to have an overwhelmingly affirmative change on my management and I am feeling much happier and content with my control.

Tech is an endearing friend

I am now 18, and my recent move into the adult world has meant I am now working, and part of the hiring process meant I had to show how I managed my diabetes, and my answer was ‘easily’.

The continuous readings mean no matter how hectic the day is going, I no longer need to spare a few seconds to scan and check my sugars, as they are always available to me and my chosen selection of family membersii, easing my transition into the working world.

I’ve had the FreeStyle Libre 2 system for nearly 3 years, and it’s continuously proven to be an endearing diabetes friend.
