FreeStyle Libre 2 Coverage in Alberta

Yes! The FreeStyle Libre 2 system is covered under Alberta government-sponsored health benefit plans for eligible patients. See more on eligibility below.

Provincial reimbursement criteria includes Alberta residents 18 years of age and over living with diabetes that require:

  • Ongoing use of insulin pump therapy, OR: 
  • A basal insulin AND a bolus insulin; OR 
  • A premixed insulin. 

Individuals living with diabetes under 18 years of age that require ongoing use of any insulin will also gain the opportunity for access to the FreeStyle Libre 2 flash glucose monitoring system.

Coverage includes the FreeStyle Libre 2 system sensors and reader.

Eligible individuals will have coverage for up to a maximum of 1 reader per 3-year benefit period and 26 sensors for each benefit year.

First, talk to your healthcare professional to get a prescription. If you quality for reimbursement under a Alberta government-sponsored health benefit plan, your healthcare provider will submit a Special Authority request to Alberta Health on your behalf. Upon approval of your request, your claim for the FreeStyle Libre 2 System will be processed like any other claim at the local pharmacy.
