Yes. Like FreeStyle Libre systems, NovoPen 6 and NovoPen Echo Plus is based on Near Field Communication (NFC), which means that the pen and the NFC antenna on the phone must be brought into close contact (0 to 2 cm distance) with each other to initiate the data transfer.
