FreeStyle Libre 2 coverage in the Yukon

Yes! The FreeStyle Libre 2 system is covered by the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefit program for people who meet certain criteria (see more on this below).

You may qualify for public reimbursement if you are:

  • A Yukon resident

  • Living with type 1 diabetes

  • Registered with the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefit program

Visit the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Program website to learn more.

Your healthcare professional applies to the program for you. In the application, they will include your chronic condition and what medications or equipment you need.

You may qualify for the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits program if you have a chronic disease or disability and you are under the age of 65.

To learn more, refer to the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Brochure (PDF 400 KB).

If you have private health insurance (for example, through your employer), you have to submit claims to that insurer first. You can only get coverage from the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Program for items not covered by other insurance.

First, talk to your healthcare professional to get a prescription. If you qualify for reimbursement under Yukon Health and Wellness, your healthcare provider will submit a Special Authority request to Yukon Health and Wellness on your behalf. Upon approval of your request, your claim for the FreeStyle Libre 2 system will be processed like any other claim at the local pharmacy.

There is an annual deductible with this program. For more information, send an email to yukon.healthcare@yukon.ca.

If you purchased the FreeStyle Libre 2 system before registering for the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Program, you’ll need to submit a claim within a year of purchase. Along with your claim, you’ll need to include:

  • Documentation of the purchase, and

  • Documentation of the recommendation from your healthcare professional

Keep in mind that even if your application is approved, you will still need to pay a deductible. For more information, please refer to the Chronic Disease and Disability Benefits Brochure (PDF 400 KB).
