FreeStyle Libre 2 coverage in New Brunswick

Yes! the FreeStyle Libre 2 system is covered under the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program (NBIPP) for eligible residents. Coverage is available for individuals living with Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes who require intensive insulin therapy (three or more insulin injections per day).

This program offers financial support for glucose monitoring sensors and a FreeStyle Libre 2 reader (if required) to help New Brunswickers better manage their diabetes.

To be eligible for coverage under the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program (NBIPP), you must:

  • be a New Brunswick resident living with Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes requiring intensive insulin therapy (three or more daily insulin injections).
  • be regularly followed by a diabetes care provider and have your care plan reviewed at least twice per year.
  • have sound knowledge of how to use glucose monitoring sensor technology effectively, including the ability to use the data for safe and effective diabetes management.
  • agree to share sensor information with your diabetes care team to optimize your treatment plan.
  • complete a sensor-based glucose monitoring orientation provided via web-based learning, virtual sessions, or in-person instruction from a sensor-based-trained vendor representative.

Eligible patients can apply to the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program (NBIPP) by following these steps:

Step 1: Book an appointment with your healthcare provider to complete the "Confirmation of Medical Eligibility for Glucose Monitoring Sensor Coverage" form. Your healthcare provider must submit the completed form directly to the NBIPP business office by email at nbipp-ppinb@gnb.ca.

Step 2: Complete the online client application form. This will require:

  • Information about your health insurance coverage (if applicable).
  • Details about your household income and size.
  • Copies of your Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessments to determine financial eligibility and contribution amounts.

Step 3: After submitting your application, wait for approval. The NBIPP team will review your application and notify you of your eligibility. If approved, you’ll receive instructions from Bayshore on accessing your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors, including shipment details.

FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors will be distributed by Bayshore. Once approved through the New Brunswick Insulin Pump Program (NBIPP), Bayshore will handle patient setup, payment processing, and sensor delivery.

Each patient will receive a total of 26 sensors over 12 monthly shipments, as follows:

  • First shipment of (4) sensors.
  • Followed by eleven shipments of (2) sensors.

Bayshore will also provide a dedicated email and phone line for NBIPP FreeStyle Libre 2 clients to assist with any questions or concerns regarding delivery.

Yes, one FreeStyle Libre 2 reader, if required, will be covered per patient every three years.

Only the uninsured costs of the reader and sensors are eligible for coverage under the program, and these amounts are income-tested.

Applicants with 100% private insurance coverage are not eligible to apply for the NBIPP. Before applying, it is important to confirm your coverage with your private health insurance provider. Your insurer must provide details about your glucose monitoring sensor coverage, as this information is required to complete the application form and calculate the amount eligible for reimbursement under the NBIPP.

New Brunswick residents living with diabetes who have private insurance and are not eligible for NBIPP will not be impacted. These individuals will continue to access coverage through their employer benefit plans. Please note that individual plan designs may vary. Patients with private insurance are encouraged to contact their insurance company or plan administrator for more information. Click here to learn more about eligibility.
