Public and private coverage for the FreeStyle Libre system – what you need to know

Several provincial and territorial governments are currently covering the FreeStyle Libre system for people managing their diabetes with insulin. 

Coverage in Ontario***

The Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program is now providing public reimbursement for the FreeStyle Libre system for Ontario residents who manage diabetes with insulin.

To learn more and understand how you may be eligible for coverage in Ontario, visit the ODB Website or speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Coverage in Quebec†††

Quebec is now providing public reimbursement for the FreeStyle Libre sensors, covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ),‡‡‡ for Quebec residents 18 years or older with experience in diabetes self-management and managing diabetes with insulin.†††

Visit the RAMQ site or speak with your healthcare provider to learn more and find out if you are covered.

If you are a resident of Quebec and meet the requirements above, here are the 5 simple steps to get reimbursed by RAMQ:

  1. Speak with your prescribing physician to confirm your eligibility for coverage by RAMQ.
  2. Your prescribing physician will fill out and submit an authorization request to RAMQ, which can take up to 25 business days to process.
  3. Bring your prescription to your local pharmacy and ask your pharmacy team to check the status of your application online. Your approval will also be sent to you by mail.
  4. Once your request is approved by RAMQ, you can fill your prescription in a pharmacy. If you qualify for coverage, you will receive reimbursement for a 3-month period to determine if the FreeStyle Libre system is right for you.
  5. To ensure uninterrupted coverage, be sure to follow up with your prescribing physician before your first 3 months of coverage ends. Reapplication requests require up to 25 business days to process. You may be eligible for additional coverage of up to 12 months.

Coverage in the Yukon§§§

Yukoners over 18 years of age with type 1 diabetes will have access to fully funded flash glucose monitors.

To learn more and understand how you may be eligible for coverage in the Yukon, speak to your prescribing physician or pharmacist.

Most private health insurance companies cover the FreeStyle Libre system. If you have private insurance, please speak to your plan administrator to find out how you may be covered.

A sensor started by the FreeStyle Libre reader will also communicate with the FreeStyle LibreLink app. The FreeStyle LibreLink app is only compatible with certain mobile devices and operating systems. Please check this website for more information about device compatibility before using the app. Use of FreeStyle LibreLink requires registration with LibreView.
