This pilot program is part of Abbott’s broader approach to protecting the environment. We're working across our operations and with key suppliers to sustainably manage our water use and address climate change by reducing carbon emissions and expanding renewable energy. We’re also designing our products to be more sustainable by reducing plastic and packaging. You can learn more about these initiatives here.

The pilot program is available at no cost to you. You can get started by ordering a free shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot.

Where can I obtain a shipping bag?

You can order a shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot.

How many used sensor kits can be sent back at a time?

Each shipping bag can contain 6 used sensor kits, or around 3 months’ supply of used sensors, sensor applicators, and sensor packs. We encourage you to only ship your bag when it is full to reduce packaging, ensure efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Can I include my other used diabetes products in the shipping bag?

Only include used sensor kits in the shipping bag. Please do not include sharps or medical waste as they cannot be accepted by our take-back program.

Why clean my used sensor kits before shipping them?

As used sensor kit components may have been exposed to bodily fluids, you may clean the components prior to placing them in the shipping bag.

How do I clean my used sensor kit components?

You may clean your used sensor kit components by wiping them using a cloth dampened with a mixture of 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water.

How many shipping bags can I order at a time?

The pilot program is a limited offering. Please order one shipping bag at a time.

What should I do if I never received a shipping bag in the mail?

We are sorry for the inconvenience. You can order another shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot while supplies last, or contact Abbott Store Customer Service for help.

What should I do if the shipping bag I received has a hole in it?

We are sorry for the inconvenience. You can order another shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot while supplies last, or contact Abbott Store Customer Service for help.

What should I do if I lost my shipping bag?

You can order another shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot.

How often should I order a new shipping bag?

We recommend that you order 1 bag every 3 months. You may place up to 6 used sensor kits (or around 3 months' supply of used sensors, sensor applicators, and sensor packs) into one bag. We encourage you to ship when your bag is full to reduce packaging, ensure efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

How can I obtain a shipping bag if the website says they are out of stock?

We have a limited supply of shipping bags for the pilot program. Please check back later. If or when inventory is back in stock, the “Add to Cart” button will be blue.

Can I send back my old reader in my shipping bag?

this time.

Where can I ship my bag when full?

Ship your sealed bag from any USPS® mailbox or post office location.

Can I use my own bag to ship my used sensor kits?

Our bags have been thoroughly tested to withstand the shipping process. Please order and use an Abbott shipping bag from AbbottStore.com/sensor-kit-take-back-pilot.

How can I dispose of my used sensor kits after the pilot is over?

We are looking forward to introducing a program for keeping used sensor kits out of landfills once the pilot is completed. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

How can I keep my used sensor kits out of landfills if the pilot program isn’t available to me?

Thank you for your interest in the take-back pilot. We are looking forward to introducing a program for keeping used sensor kits out of landfills once the pilot is completed. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Will the pilot program become available in my country?

Thank you for your interest in the take-back pilot. We are looking forward to introducing a program for keeping used sensor kits out of landfills once the pilot is completed. We will provide more information on launch timing for specific countries when that information becomes available. Until then, please continue to dispose of your used sensor kits in accordance with your local rules and regulations.

Does the pilot program have an end date?

The pilot program is intended to run between 6 months to one year. We will let you know in advance of the pilot program ending.

Where are my used sensor kits sent for disposal?

Used sensor kits are shipped to our partnering waste-to-energy facilities where they are processed and converted
into energy.

What is waste-to-energy?

Waste-to-energy is the process of converting waste materials into electricity and heat, generating a renewable energy source. Waste-to-energy reduces carbon emissions by offsetting the need for energy from fossil sources and reducing methane generation from landfills.

Why can I ship my used sensor kits if they contain a sharp?

Sensor applicators contain a needle which retracts during the sensor application process to fully encapsulate the sharp. Please make sure to put the cap back on the sensor applicator prior to placing in the shipping bag.

Why are you offering a pilot program?

The pilot program will help us learn and identify the most effective solution for collecting used sensor kits and keeping them out of landfills.

Why waste-to-energy instead of recycling?

Sensor kits are made from multiple materials and are not designed for easy disassembly, and Abbott wanted to find a way to keep them out of landfills quickly. We are working on a solution that will allow used sensor kits to be recycled, which we hope will be available soon.

What are the environmental benefits of waste-to-energy?

Waste-to-energy decreases the volume of solid waste destined for landfills and can recover energy from the waste burning process. This generates a renewable energy source and reduces carbon emissions by offsetting the need for energy from fossil sources and reducing methane generation from landfills.

Isn’t burning waste bad for the environment?

Confined and controlled burning can decrease the volume of solid waste destined for landfills and recover energy from the waste burning process. This generates a renewable energy source and reduces carbon emissions by offsetting the need for energy from fossil sources and reducing methane generation from landfills.

www.epa.gov/smm/energy-recovery-combustion-municipal-solid-waste-msw#EnergyRecovery

How much ash is generated by waste-to-energy?

After energy is recovered, the amount of ash generated ranges from 15-25 percent (by weight) and from 5-15 percent (by volume) of the original waste processed.

www.epa.gov/smm/energy-recovery-combustion-municipal-solid-waste-msw#EnergyRecovery

Do I get anything in return for sending back my used sensor kits?

There is not currently a rewards program for participating in the pilot. By sending back your used sensor kits, you can transform your used sensor kits into energy and help keep plastic waste out of landfills.

Does Abbott make money by turning my used sensor kits into energy?

No. Abbott does not generate a profit by turning your used sensor kits into energy. It actually costs us money to run this program. Abbott's commitment to sustainability and the environment makes the investment worthwhile.
